'Quantum of Solace' doesn't hit theaters until Nov. 6, but that hasn't stopped fans from firing up the Internet with theories about the 22nd Bond film. Moviefone journeyed to the 'Solace' set in Chile to get the real dirt behind whispers of gay villains, an Al Pacino cameo, Daniel Craig nude scenes and more. "I'm letting the cat out of the bag," producer Michael G. Wilson sighed. "They're going to be mad." RUMOR: The latest Bond villain is gay.
MAYBE. Director Marc Forster won't confirm or deny whether bad guy Dominic Greene is gay, but the man who plays Greene, Mathieu Amalric ('The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'), suggests viewers watch for subtext in his interaction with Bond, saying only that his ruthless businessman baddie has sexual "issues." But really, gay or straight, who can resist Bond?
RUMOR: Al Pacino appears briefly as the No. 1 criminal mastermind.
FALSE. Wilson says we can't look forward to Pacino making a bow in the final minutes of the movie, but he didn't rule out a scene revealing an ultimate villain that Bond fans have been buzzing about. Our dream casting? Sean Connery, of course.
RUMOR: Daniel Craig bares the full monty in 'Quantum.'
FALSE. But not for producer Barbara Broccoli's lack of effort. "I'm always after him to take his clothes off, every day," she jokes. "I have to fight on behalf of all the women, and some of the men, too. I'm doing my best." Keep your fingers crossed for next time.
RUMOR: 'Quantum' will get an R rating.
FALSE. Just like 'Casino Royale,' 'Quantum of Solace' will go easy on the naughty stuff. "We try to make these family films," says Wilson. But that doesn't mean there isn't blood and guts. According to Craig, the film shows "the consequence of the violence, which is much more responsible than hiding it."
RUMOR: Riots in Panama shut down production.
FALSE. Not that there wasn't a dust-up in the country. "There were some riots with the construction unions," says Wilson. Wondering why? So is he. "I could never get a straight story. Sometimes it was about safety, sometimes money, sometimes the price of petrol. But we moved our rest day, that's all."
RUMOR: This will be director Marc Forster's first and last Bond movie.
TRUE. Forster, who admits he initially "wasn't sure he wanted to do the film," says he'd probably pass on the next 007. "They were talking to me about it, but if I were ever to do a big movie again, it would have to be my own franchise. I'd rather create something that's mine."
RUMOR: Amy Winehouse will sing the theme.
FALSE. While the producers said they're weeks away from deciding, we bet retro chanteuses like Winehouse or even newly hip-again Shirley Bassey (who's sung three 007 themes) are possibilities. Forster, inspired by 'Dr. No' and 'Goldfinger,' says his Bond will have a "late '60s, early '70s thriller" sensibility.
RUMOR: The plot is eco-friendly.
TRUE. When Greene uses an eco-themed organization as a cover for global domination, Bond has to think green. "It's more about the idea of water and controlling water," says Wilson. "It's one of the scarcest resources, but with this organization, it's all about controlling all of the scarce resources."
RUMOR: Bond's latest gal pal is a Latina.
TRUE. But not entirely. Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko isn't a native Spanish speaker, but she's playing one as Camille, a spy with her own vengeful agenda. "I have a good ear, so I can imitate people," she says. "And Camille doesn't have a heavy accent. But I had to speak a little Spanish in the film."
RUMOR: Daniel Craig says he is quitting Bond after the next two films.
FALSE. Craig says the only thing that will push him away from 007 is a bad script. "I want them to stand alone as good films," he says. "If that continues, we'll keep making them. And if it doesn't, we'll stop." And if his joints go? "What do you mean go?" he jokes.
RUMOR: Bond gets married in 'Quantum.'
FALSE. While Craig admits that Bond ends up in a honeymoon suite with Agent Fields (Gemma Arterton), he grumbles, "Don't have to be in the honeymoon suite to have a good time. Don't have to be married to get into the honeymoon suite." Producer Barbara Broccoli is more succinct: "He doesn't get married in the film."
RUMOR: The Chilean people are up in arms about the film.
TRUE. Because Chile is a stand-in for rival Bolivia in 'Quantum,' patriotic types are feeling insulted. "Some people in Chile are unhappy," Wilson admits. "I suppose we knew there was a war between then 125 years ago, but we weren't aware it was still an issue."
RUMOR: Elvis appears in the movie.
TRUE. Well, kind of. Played by Anatole Taubman (a trilingual Swiss actor), the character of "Elvis" remains an enigma. But we know one thing he's not. "The guy is not an Elvis impersonator," says Wilson. "This was one of those little conceits that [screenwriter Paul Haggis] had, and the name stuck."
RUMOR: The gadgets at MI6 headquarters will be more matter-of-fact this time around.
TRUE. Forget the really wacky inventions of Bond movies past. "We live in a gadget world, and unfortunately that means the stuff we use is applied technology that maybe Secret Services are using," says Craig. "The Aston Martin is still the best gadget around."
RUMOR: The new Bond girl is afraid of heights and can't do her own stunts.
TRUE AND FALSE. Despite having to jump out of a plane and run along the edge of a cliff for 'Quantum,' Kurylenko says she's terrified of heights. Still, she bucked up. "It always starts with me saying, 'No way, I can't do it, I'm so scared,'" she says. "And then I end up doing it."
