Critic Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times | Roger Ebert

Here is a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk INTO the theater humming the songs.

Somewhere around its midpoint, Across the Universe captured my heart, and I realized that falling in love with a movie is like falling in love with another person. Imperfections, however glaring, become endearing quirks once you?ve tumbled.

While the songs are recycled, Across the Universe stands out just by existing.

All you need is love -- for the Beatles, for psychedelic visuals, for ideas about being young in the ?60s -- to fully enjoy Across the Universe.

The Onion (A.V. Club) | Tasha Robinson

It's all very clever and thought-through, but all the allusions don't much bolster the bland central romance or the paper-thin treatment of '60s social issues.

While style trumps substance, something in the way this '60s tribute moves attracts us.

To call it trippy would be an understatement. Your head might explode. Just don't accuse Taymor of playing it safe.

Elements of Across the Universe are shockingly awful and the film lasts at least 30 minutes past the bearable stage. But if you like the Beatles and the idea of hearing about 20 covers of their work fills you with a perverse joy, this may be the movie for you.

The Hollywood Reporter | Stephen Farber

Julie Taymor's visual gifts are very much in evidence in Across the Universe, an ambitious, only partly successful attempt to reinvigorate the musical genre.

Entertainment Weekly | Owen Gleiberman

Goofy, pompous, annoyingly boomer-myopic Fab Four musical.

Washington Post | Ann Hornaday

A yawn and most unforgivably features some appalling arrangements of the Beatles' best-loved songs.

Boston Globe | Ty Burr

Hobbled by its vaguely insulting comic-book version of the '60s and by a humorlessness that can only come from talented people convinced they're creating work for the ages.

WTF?!?!?!

"this was one of the worst movies i have ever seen,it was basically they would be talking about something, then they would start singing a beatles song about something that was not even related to what they were just talking about, and then all the walls would melt away, and then they would start talking about something completely from either the song that was just sung or what they were saying before said song was sung. It just seemed like they were jumping the plot around randomly to jam in as many god damn beatles songs as they could."

Across the Universe

"A story line that captures the essence of the real life lyrics of the Beatles songs. It provides a new and refreshing perspective to their meaning with delightful images and spirit."

Across The Universe. AMAZING.

"All I can say about this movie is it grows on you. AND you either like it ALOT or absolutely HATE it. I LOVE this movie. Now don't get me wrong it will NEVER be as good as the beatles but that doesnt make it bad. AND it's not a kids movie. Hello did you even watch it. AND it didnt make sense to some of you because you didnt listen. my brother doesnt understand "Strawberry Fields Forever" and i cant explain it but i do. if you have the chance see this movie it's a must. Listen to the lyrics and it will make sense to you. Feel the movie grow attached to the characters and enjoy it. Don't decide you HATE it 10 mins. in because you will miss all of the good parts."

Genius!

"Who ever wrote this movie was a genius. I was blown away when I saw it. Every time I see it, I pick up on something I didn't see the first time. The music is incredible! This is one of those movies that mean something different for everyone. Excellent movie."

Best movie

"I absolutley fell in love with this movie....Amazing cast, wonderfully done. I havent stopped listenening to the soundtrack since i saw this movie. Great remakes of already great songs. So powerful, its full of heart, soul, and amazing visually stunning camera work. Definetly best picture of the year as well as the last ten years! Some critics are just way to closed minded for a good movie, i loved it and i usually hate musicals!"

The Worst Movie EVER

"I know this is suppose to be somewhat of a horror movie, but I didn't think it was going to be so horrible. The entire movie looked bad. The visuals were dark and lacked details and the action sequences was confusing. There was absolutely no cool or stylish effects that made you cheer. The movie was boring. It kept showing teenie bopper soap opera scenes and you never ever grew fond of any of the characters, so when they died off, you didn't feel for them. Infact the audience laughed at them as they died. Some people should never be given a chance to make movies. I am totally disappointed. This movie belonged in the hands of an artist and should have been given to a real movie actor to play in. But it got made by some very untalented people. This movie series needs to get back into the hands of Ridley Scott and James Cameron and take it out of the hands of hollywood brats who party and dont' know how to make movies. I wouldn't even call this a fasion show. I just wasted one hour and twenty five minutes of Christmas. Torture."
