Holiday rush is upon us

In the last weekend before a blockbuster-filled end of the year, Par's "Aeon Flux" is the only wide opener this weekend, hitting 2,608 playdates. Pic, which cancelled its review screenings, will mix it up with the third week of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and the surprisingly leggy "Walk the Line." Starting next week, however, it's one blockbuster after another. Disney and Walden's "The Chronicles of Narnia" bows Dec. 9, followed by Universal's "King Kong" on Dec. 16 and several big pics over the Christmas weekend.

'Flux' ducks screenings

Paramount's decided to go the no-review route for its sci-fi actioner "Aeon Flux." Studio has quietly canceled review screenings of "Aeon," starring Charlize Theron as an acrobatic rebel leader, over the past week. The pic, based on an animated 1996 MTV cable series, opens Friday domestically with about 2,500 playdates. Move to pull the plug on critic showings is somewhat unusual for a relatively high-profile pic. Sources say studio execs believe "Aeon" is tracking well among its core audience and sees little upside to be gained from advance reviews, given the usual critical reaction to sci-fi fare.
