If, as the Virgil quote that starts the film claims, fortune favors the bold, Alexander has not been nearly bold enough.
Read the full reviewThe best there is to say is that it's better than ''Troy."
Read the full reviewSince the movie lacks a vision of what Alexander was really about as a man and a figure in history, it falls back all too frequently on movie spectacle.

Read the full reviewAt best an honorable failure, an intelligent and ambitious picture that crucially lacks dramatic flair and emotional involvement.
Read the full reviewBy de-mythologizing Alexander, Stone has turned him into an unbelievable individual. We accept great deeds from great people, not from sniveling whiners.
Read the full review[Stone] gives us provocative notes and sketches but not a final draft. The film doesn't feel at ease with itself. It says too much, and yet leaves too much unsaid.
Read the full reviewAn exhausted epic, one that Stone has directed with an almost startling lack of personality or vision.
Read the full reviewEnjoyable in some places, but dreadful in others. It's boring here and exciting there. And it's almost always goofy.

Read the full reviewThis is the costliest, most logistically complex feature of the filmmaker's career, and it appears that the effort to wrangle so many beasts, from elephants to movie stars and money men, along with the headaches that come with sweeping period films, got the better of him.
Read the full reviewAlexander breaks the key rule that makes movies move: Show, don't tell.
Read the full reviewStone tries to make us like Alexander because he's good, when he should have made us want to watch Alexander because he's amazing.

Alex The Great
"I have watched that movie 21 times, and still can't seem to get enough of Colins dick showing. The way he held onto Jared...They should do a movie together based on SEX!!!!!!!!!!!"
In My Opinion
"Years ago I read several books by Mary Renault (Fire From Heaven and The Persian Boy were 2 of them) and at once thought she might have been used as a resource on this movie. A lot of things in this movie seemed to come straight from her books; such as Alexander and Hephaistion's (sp?) relationship, and the Persian boy Bagoas. Many ancient Greek philosophers hinted at Alexander's sexuality. So what. I mean, if he were alive today, how many "straight" men would call him homosexual to his face?! Not many, I guess. The movie did have its MUDDLED moments, I agree, but for once a true light came into focus regarding Alexander's "human" side. And by human I mean the love/hate relationship between his mother and himself; his father and the acceptance he craved in every form; his comrades at arm, and so forth. I was glad the war scenes didn't overtake the movie, but relied on the man himself, and the nature of this man. Remember Richard Burton's (who was a GREAT, actor by the way) turn as Alexander? Watch that movie for the war scenes; it would suit the critics royally."

"What I have noticed by reading all these reviews is an extreme focus on not the movie itself, but on the element of homosexuality. What people fail to understand is the historical aspect of this. Although not all parts of this movie are historically correct this certain part most deffinately is. During those times homosexuality/bisexuality was not looked down upon, but more so encouraged. Their outlook was that it relieved stress when the men were away from their woman during times of war, etc. since of course, sexual acts are healthy for both the body and mind. I feel that if people understood this they would see the movie in a different ligh. Perhaps American is not quite ready for this sort of theme to be put into a movie. It truely makes you wonder...if Alexander the Great and other great Ancient people, like the Greeks, were homosexual...why do people today see it as a such a "wrong" thing to do?"
too much thats not true
"The battle scenes are perfect. The only thing is that he is potraided as a homosexual. Which there is no proff of."

"I think the movie was really good, but there was too much left unsaid about some characters. The movie never gave a broad background about some important characthers such as Roxane,Hepheiston, and Alexander's father."
A Beautiful Film Too Smart for Stupid Critics
"The movie is wonderful: dramatic, bloody, everything you would expect from a story about Alexander. The only problem with this movie is that it drags along sometimes but once a battle scene starts its all good."
What could have been
"I think Stone should have focused more on Alexander's military exploits than his male lovers. This movie had two battles, neither battle was long enough,Alexander should have been more of a war movie. the focus should have been more on the marches, battles Alexander and his army faced. In the history books that is what Alexander is remembered for, that is what makes his legacy, his army never was defeated. Moviegoers wanted to see this brought to the screen. Not men kissing, dancing, talking affection every other scene. Most know Alexander was bi,but Stone focused to much screen time on this. as a result the movie flopped."
Exotic
"Alexander's life was a complex one. I think the director did a good job of being historically accurate and portraying the exotic locales that Alexander visited, truly bringing out the fact that he was out not to take over just Persia, but the world."
