A surprisingly effective thriller.

Awake is a pleasing if negligible diversion.

Too bad, because until it essentially turns into a medical-thriller version of "Look Who's Talking," the movie hums along comfortably enough as slick B fare.

Awake is short enough (about 85 minutes) that it doesn't wear out its welcome. It's not a good movie but it's silly and lively enough to keep most viewers from dozing off, even if that might be a more profitable use of their time.

Christensen delivers a low-key performance that is ultimately quite appealing, and he's well matched by the beautiful Alba. Olin brings unexpected depths to what could have been a stock role, and Terrence Howard uses his easy ability to project innate decency to excellent effect.

Harold's thriller does have an attention-getting plot hook, but piles on too many narrative gimmicks to maintain suspense or credibility.

Los Angeles Times | Jan Stuart

Trashily in-your-face thriller, which leans heavily for its effects on intense sympathy pain, improbable reversals and the mystifying star appeal of Jessica Alba.

The writer and director, Joby Harold, claims to have been inspired to write the film while suffering from a particularly painful kidney stone. Watching it may be for some a comparable experience.

The movie tries going for a laugh or two. It even makes stabs at irony. But since none of the story is suspenseful, remotely believable, or, at the very least, cheaply entertaining, who cares?

Interesting

"Actually when I started watching this, I didn't know what it was about, not even the genre - and then I realized it was a dude awake during his surgury. I was like...WTF? I didn't want to watch some dude's travel's in his mind while under anesthesia. So I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when the plot started revealing itself. It was completely unexpected because I had no idea where they were going. This taught me something. I am never going to watch another preview or read another review prior to seeing a movie. They so pre-set your mind. I ended up really liking this film I don't think I would have if I had known what was going to happen...or even known that it was a semi-thriller. Anyway, good flick overall."

I actually agree with the critics!

"The critics give this movie a 46/100, which is actually very nice and considerate of them. All in all, this movie was a waste of money, time, and thought. The idea and premise of the movie is an excellent one, but the way the movie was written and directed was extraordinarily poor. Not only is the movie confusing and horribly written, but the ending of the movie leaves a little TOO much to the imagination. Instead of leaving the theater feeling like I had an enjoyable movie going experience, I left perplexed and bewildered that a movie with such an excellent idea was directed so poorly that it ruined the entire movie- whether or not the idea for the flick was good."

Interesting Movie

"British fellow by the name of Joby Harold wrote and directs this psychological thrillerstarring Jessica Alba, Hayden Christensen, and Terrence Howard. The movie begins with a zoom in close up of the main character, Clay Beresford(Christensen) who is taking a bath. As he ducks his head from under the water, he is greeted by none other than a scantily clothed Jessica Alba, who plays his love interestSamantha Lockwood. There is some lovey, dovey, dialog, followed by her, as you may have suspected jumping in the tub with him for some serious fun, then the story begins. Beresford(sounds like a cattle brand) is a yuppie billionaire who heads a big corporationthat buys and merges other companies. As it turns out he needs a heart transplant ASAP and is awaiting a donor. Ironically, he is friends with Dr Jack Harper (Terrence Howard) a Heart Surgeon who will be performing the transplant. His mother Lilith Beresford played with class by Lena Olin, helped start the corporation with her late husband and initially is not aware that Clay and Samantha are an item. A healthy heart is located and the surgery is scheduled, as he is a O- blood type, like ME, and it takes a year or more to find a donor. At this point in the movie, Clay decides to confront his Mother about his love for Samantha and they are married the night before his surgery. Lilith is adamantly against the marriage and Dr Harper performing the transplant. She wants her son in the hands of the most famous Heart Surgeon around, Dr Jonathan Neyer, played by Arliss Howard, but the 22 year old Clay is getting a bit rebellious and trusts his friend Dr Harper to do the transplant. Right from the beginning of the surgery, something seems a bit odd to Clay. First off theregular anesthetician calls in sick, so a substitute is brought in. This character, Dr Larry Lupin, is played by the Professional actor Christopher McDonald. He is given the knock out Juice, but for some reason it does"

Awake is Supa-Man

"Awake is one bad-ass movie! I had tons-o-fun watching Awake. All-new plot, never tried before, sweet-ass drama, kick-ass ending, and finally gave hot chick Alba a 'damn good thrashing.'"
