Although the big picture itself gets mushy, the small moments, especially involving Fey, are sharp.
Read the full reviewThough the competition hasn't exactly been stiff, Fey and Poehler may well be the best female comedy duo since Lucy and Ethel.
Read the full reviewIn this era of Apatow and Ferrell and Rogen and Wilson, of men monopolizing movie comedy, Baby Mama feels absurdly momentous, and even political. Fey and Poehler aren't just taking back control of their bodies. They're taking back control of their profession.
Read the full reviewThere's nothing terribly wrong with Baby Mama but it's probably better suited for viewing on television, where many of the participants cut their teeth. This is small screen stuff masquerading as something bigger.
Read the full reviewThe movie hardly allows itself any sharp moments at all -- it's much too sweet-natured to be cruel, and much too cheerful to be angry. It probably could have pushed a few more buttons, but Baby Mama aims to please and succeeds.
Read the full reviewBaby Boom serves up plenty of smart, knowing laughs early on, but by the time it hits the third act (or would that be trimester?), it barely crawls to the finish line.
Read the full reviewIt's not without laughs--Poehler and Fey, as ever, have strong chemistry, and there's a truly bizarre scene in which Martin offers Fey a strange "reward" for a job well done--but there's a lot of arid space between them.
Read the full reviewBaby Mama is the most disappointing movie of the year so far--which, granted, isn't saying a lot in mid-April.
Read the full reviewThe show is redeemed by its co-stars, up to a point. They struggle womanfully, and sometimes successfully, to find truth in the script's silly symphony of false notes.
Read the full reviewYou could blast for it, and you still won't find 30 uninterrupted seconds of truth in Baby Mama. The characters are lies. Their emotional workings are lies. The jokes are based on lies about human behavior.
Read the full reviewFor those who crave mannerisms and shtick and like their jokes set up and knocked out with plenty of arrows and quote marks, Baby Mama may fall flat. But audiences alive to the modest charms of its take on female friendship will be rewarded with at least a few quiet chuckles.
Read the full reviewThe film never comes fully to term, as it were: the visual style is sitcom functional, and even the zippiest jokes fall flat because of poor timing. But, much like the prickly, talented Ms. Fey, it pulls you in with a provocative and, at least in current American movies, unusual mix of female intelligence, awkwardness and chilled-to-the-bone mean.

Not funny BUT racial
"I saw this movie on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 10 pm in Snellville, GA. It was recommended by a friend, so I went. I was insulted by the two racial stereotypical lines in the movie. "Oh, don't bring home one of those blacks babies, like the actors do. Oh see my new black baby". And, "you got baby momma drama! Ask any black man about baby momma drama...he'll know". As to insinuate that people of other races don't have "baby momma drama" and other races don't adopt children of other races. I didn't like the movie at all and found it very degrading of blacks (as a race) and of people who can not bare children naturally. Two (2) thumbs down!"
give it a forty
"Went to see this with my sister, after reading several fairly good reviews. Very disappointing!!! Cliche characters, and jokes were set up way in advance. Unfunny premise on the part of the surrogate, guessed the ending WAY in advance. As disappointing as "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". Both films are forgetable."
Whole theater laughed repeatedly
"We found this movie very funny glad we went to see it! The rest of you who griped about this movie are jus perfectionist and unpleaseable! JMO!"
Awesomely Funny
"I saw this with my BFF, and we laughed until we were crying. We went back to see it again less than a week later! The humor very easily could have been over the top, however it was perfectly done with a sweet ending. This is easily the funniest movie I have seen in a very long time."
freakin awesome!
"this movie was the best i have seen in a while! i was very happy with it but i do agree that they showed the funniest parts in the comercials which made me kinda mad. but otherwise it was an awesome movie."
AMAZING
"I loved this movie. I laughed my head off through the entire thing. I cannot wait to see it again!!"
Just OK
"The funniest parts of the movie are the same shown on the commercial. The middle got very boring that I actually fell asleep. Started off good, but then flopped. I was disappointed especially since I had to pay like $30 to drive to the movie theatre, $5 for a bottle of water and got a horrible movie. Could have been better written."
