'Dreamgirls' a holiday treat
12/26/06"Dreamgirls" may have been late to the holiday party, hittiing threaters on Monday instead of ahead of the holiday weekend, but the Paramount-DreamWorks musical showed plenty of kick, taking in $8.7 million in a single day and landing in the box office top 10. Meanwhile, Fox's PG-rated family comedy "Night at the Museum" hauled in $43.2 million over the four-day Christmas frame to easily dominate domestic box office and leave any competition in the dust.
Family feud at box office

Both pics are going up against Sony's Will Smith starrer "The Pursuit of Happyness," which lands at 2,852 playdates. "Web" will spin in 3,566 engagements and "Eragon" hits 3,020.

No director is yet attached. Wolfe's novel follows an innocent college freshman from a North Carolina mountain town who must adapt to the harsh realities of a contemporary university campus. The book, published last year, ranked No. 11 on Publishers Weekly's end-of-the-year list. Picador USA released "I Am Charlotte Simmons" in paperback in August. Though the book enjoyed some sales success and was No. 1 on numerous college campuses, it drew a lukewarm reception from some critics for its length (nearly 700 pages).
