'Night,' 'Pursuit' take top two spots at box office
01/07/07Fox's family adventure "Night at the Museum" and Sony's inspirational drama "The Pursuit of Happyness" continued to prove a potent one-two punch at the B.O. in the first frame of 2007. Pics finished in the top two spots, respectively, for the third straight frame as "Museum" painted in another $24 million, and "Happyness" smiled with $13 million. PG-rated "Museum," starring Ben Stiller, has taken in $164 million. Will Smith vehicle "Happyness" has grossed $124 million. Pic bowed at No. 1 a month ago.
'Children of Men' takes a bigger bow
01/04/07After an impressive limited run, will Universal's gritty, dystopian sci-fi thriller "Children of Men" cross over in its expansion? Booked in 16 locations over New Year's, the Alfonso Cuaron-helmed film played to almost $44,000 per engagement; now it widens to more than 1,200. Aiming for more general audiences will be PG-13 pics "Code Name: The Cleaner" (New Line) and "Freedom Writers" (Paramount), as well as Lionsgate's CG-animated "Happily N'Ever After."
Ejiofor to star in 'Children of Men,' 'Tonight at Noon'
10/25/05Chiwetel Ejiofor has been set to star in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed "Children of Men," as well as the Michael Almereyda-helmed indie "Tonight at Noon." Ejiofor, who just starred with Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster in the Spike Lee-directed "Inside Man," first joins Owen and Julianne Moore in the futuristic "Children of Men." He plays the leader of a radical political faction bent on controlling the future of the human race; the movie is based on the P.D. James novel. He'll then join Connie Nielsen, Lauren Ambrose and Rutger Hauer in "Tonight at Noon." Ejiofor plays two characters in an Almereyda-scripted movie about New Yorkers who experience random encounters that define their lives.
Moore giving birth to 'Children'
06/15/05Julianne Moore is in negotiations to star opposite Clive Owen in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed sci-fier "Children of Men." Strike Entertainment is producing the adaptation of P.D. James' novel for Universal Pictures. They are eyeing a September start date on "Children," which would wrap in time for Moore to move over to another sci-fi movie, "Next," in which she will co-star with Nicolas Cage for Revolution Studios. The dystopian story is set in the near future, in a world sent into turmoil when people lose the ability to have children. Moore's character is the first woman to become pregnant in nearly 20 years. Owen is enlisted to protect her after the death of the Earth's youngest person, age 18.
Clive Owen to star in 'Children of Men'
04/27/05Clive Owen has inked a deal to star in Universal's "Children of Men." Alfonso Cuaron will helm the sci-fi film about a future where people can no longer have children. Based on P.D. James' novel of the same title, the story is set in a dystopic society, radically transformed by humans' inability to reproduce and sent into chaos by the news of the death of the earth's youngest person, age 18. When the first woman becomes pregnant in more than 20 years, and thus becomes the most sought-after person in the world, Owen's character is enlisted to protect her.
