Washington Post | Stephen Hunter

It's funny, it's heartbreaking, it's scary, it's exhilarating. It's got love stuff and lots of laughs and cool gunfights. It's really long and it feels like it's over in 15 minutes. It does something so few movies do these days: It satisfies.

A somber, often downbeat depiction of human savagery and treachery as well as of human kindness. Writer-director Anthony Minghella has meticulously crafted an intimate epic.

Watching this movie, it seems to be the next level down from great -- maybe too episodic. But it burns in the memory weeks after you see it.

Three quarters of Cold Mountain consist of some of the most masterful and absorbing filmmaking of the year. The final quarter is Hollywood business as usual.

The specter of war haunts Cold Mountain, but you remember it for the heat of its romantic yearning and the mysteries that wrap themselves around you until you're lost in another world.

The result is a mountain of honest, nourishing corn, a lavish evocation of simplicity that, for all its showy sophistication, has an appealing emotional directness. For all its sweep and scope and movie-star magic, Cold Mountain is studded with fine small moments and deft supporting performances.

A grim picaresque odyssey across a beautiful scarred landscape laced together by private romantic longing. Handsomely made and vividly acted.

Though Law and Kidman spend much of the movie apart, Minghella and ace editor Walter Murch arrange their interweaving subplots like a running dialogue between two lovers, each compelled to survive on the thin hope that they'll be reunited.

This is what makes the distinctly unromantic Cold Mountain' such a breath of fresh air. Its battles are hideous bloodbaths.

It's certainly a successful adaptation, features numerous memorable performances (mostly by the supporting players), and is worth a post-holiday expenditure of time and money.

By the end of the film, you admire the artistry and the care, you know that the actors worked hard and are grateful for their labors, but you wonder who in God's name thought this was a promising scenario for a movie. It's not a story, it's an idea.

Good, sometimes thrilling, but it's less a war epic than an evocative romantic melodrama with a patchy first hour.

It's enough of a spectacle to enjoy. It's too bad the stars are little more than serviceable and give the movie title an irony it could certainly do without.

Minghella's adaptation of the 1997 Charles Frazier novel is emotionally detached and almost too studiously carpentered: a willed exercise in mythmaking.

There are not one, but two wars raging inside this adaptation: one between the North and the South, and another, more calamitous war between art and middlebrow entertainment.

Most entertaining!!

"I too loved the movie for many different reasons:It put a different twist on the civil war. Followed through on a romance that never really got off the ground. A man taking on what is traditionally a female's role in films -determination to get his woman, against all odds. The bond of family and friends in the face of adversity. And in the end, just like in life....Good does not always overcome evil...But, sometimes just breaks even.I think think that the Movie critics' ratings were not remotely close to the value that the public placed on this movie. Too bad, they could use a second viewing!! Woodbridge, Virginia"

Cold Mountain

"This was a stunning masterpiece! My all-time favorite movie. Nicole Kidman & Renee Zellweger are brilliant actresses & Jude Law is a Fantastic actor. The roles of Ada, Ruby, & Inman were meant to be played by these three. If you haven't watched or bought this movie yet, I advise you to do so now so you can expierience this spectacular movie!!"

Good movie

"What I couldn't believe was the sex scene. Did they really do it or what????? Maybe that is why Tom and Nicole are divorcing!"

Greatest Movie!

"Hello Everyone! I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE Cold Mountain. It is one of the greatest movies, in my opinion! It's true that there's lots of blood, and sadness, and terror, but did you think during the time of the Civil War everyone was happy and having a great blood-free time!?? The Civil War was a very hard time, and the movie is very accurate for that. And all the comments about the ending... it was originally a book! So if you want to complain... complain to the author, or at least the book's website! The movie perfectly reflects the book. And overall, the whole movie was very romantic, and daring. Being a deserter isn't an honorable thing, but I think that if all of us were fighting in that time period, most of us would have run away- no matter how much honor you think you possess. I know it seems shameful, but he really ran away because he was exhausted of all the kidding. I don't think most of us have killing on our daily schedule! And like the blind man says in the story, "This war's almost over. We don't need your help to lose it." And besides, it makes for a great story! Renee Zellweger was excellent, and added to the movie with her humor and skill. Jude Law- handsome as ever- was excellent, and a great hero (despite desertion) he defended his home by fighting, and saved many lives off of the bloody battlefields. Nicole Kidman, was splendid! Her acting skills really showed through with this dramatic, emotional, romantic movie of the year! In my opinion, this is one of the Greatest movies, a top pic for me! I strongly advise everyone to see it!"

great movie

"I found this movie to be in the same class as Gone With the Wind. I was so wanting to see a happy ending for Ada and Inman. Rene Z. was great she had me laughing and crying at times with her excellent talent."

dopey10027 | 12/31/2004 12:00 AM Notify

amazing

"Cold Mountain was a phenominal movie. Nicole Kidman and Jude Law were both fantastic. I didn't like how Jude had to die at the end,but I kind of had a feeling from the beginning of the movie that he was eventually going to die. I gave this movie 5 stars because it was a great romantic and dramatic love story!!!"
