Critic Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times | Roger Ebert

A musical and a biography, and brings to both of those genres a worldly sophistication that is rare in the movies.

De-Lovely is something dishy and rare: a biopic about a happy, and even enchanted, man.

Rolling Stone | Peter Travers

At its best, De-Lovely evokes a time, a place and a sound with stylish wit and sophistication.

Turns out to be thoughtful, creative, and generally worthy of its subject, with sins that are more of ambition and miscalculation than of execution.

As a bio-pic, De-Lovely is pretty standard, run-of-the-mill stuff (albeit with an interesting framing device). However, as a "best hits" collection of Cole Porter's music, it is unparalleled.

A sprightly musical revue built around Cole Porter songs and a few biographical tidbits culled from his extraordinary life.

Benefits greatly from Kevin Kline's outstanding performance as the ultra-sophisticated songwriter whose resilient marriage anchored a complicated double life.

De-Lovely has its moments of delight. Its defects lie mostly in failing to fully delineate what made musical icon Cole Porter tick.

A movie so lifeless and drained of genuine joie de vivre it makes you long for the largely fictional earlier film.

If Porter's songs are so timeless, why does the movie sound like something that might have played on VH1 five years ago?

A mishmash of a musical. The movie never gels -- despite Kline's nuanced performance, the stars' exquisite period clothes, designed by Armani, and, of course, Porter's great songs.

Despite a subject of immense potential -- the movie's surprisingly uninvolving.

Something certainly blows here, but it isn't the archangel's horn.

The movie drains Cole and Linda Porter of blood and fills them with embalming fluid.

Probably not for young people

"I guess I can understand the bad reviews this movie received but only if the reviewers were 50 or younger. For my husband and I (who are 76) it had us singing along, recognizing where every song fit in our past movie and stage experiences. Some familiar songs we were excited to discover were Cole Porter's. We loved this movie."

excellent

"I am still trying to see if I can rent the movie the critics from Variety, EW and NY Times saw becasue there is no way the things they said woudl apply to this movie.. what a great concept from beginning to end.. great acting from all. I was De-Lighted to learn so much about this awesome talented man!!"

Good but cameos ruined

"Kline Judd were great but some of the cameos seemed pushed in. Alanis Morissette hickups through a classic song, she should have shut up and let the backup singers let loose."

Merits Oscars

"Stunning. Moving, Entertaining, Proves pro critics for the most part do not know what the public wants and likes. We have purchased the CD and DVD. The musical performances (except for Sheryl Crowe) were outstanding. Porter's music is timeless. My husband and I rate it best of the year and we see a lot of movies. Kline and Judd moved me to tears with their performances. What a talent Porter was. What a remarkable woman Linda Lee was. And what a love story. Make every effort to see this flick. Forget the professional critiques and give yourself a treat."

Close to De-Perfect!

"If you love the stage, musicals, and all things Cole Porter, you'll fall in love with this movie. Very entertaining and charming."

Lovely as stated

"Naomi Judd is in her element and in this periodpiece. Kevin Kline is amazing, as always. I was stuck by how life-like and naturals the actors were in their parts. I am a Cole Porter fan; and I thought that this was a charming movie!"
