Critic Reviews
The film's dramatic moments are small but exquisitely rendered so that you feel the emotions experienced so many years ago. The film lingers afterward in your mind like a favorite vacation that triggered moments of sheer intensity.
Read the full reviewA refreshingly gentle treatment of familiar themes such as the inevitability of change, the dashing of youthful illusions and mutability of family. Enhanced by an exotic locale, the movie overcomes a well-trodden narrative path and unflinchingly brandishes its sentimentality as it stakes out its crowd-pleasing territory.
Read the full reviewFor much of its duration, December is poignantly bittersweet, but the closing sugar rush washes its pleasing ambiguities away.
Read the full reviewThe filmmakers can't decide whether to trust the period innocence of the book (and play down their casting coup) or let the young man rip as a preteen-babe magnet... So December Boys splits the difference -- safely, dully.
Read the full reviewA problematic memory play, shot through with honey-colored nostalgia, that backs nervously into darker matters.
Read the full reviewOccasionally touching but rarely convincing coming-of-ager.
Read the full reviewOversaturated with sweetness and light.
Read the full reviewThere seem to be two movies going on here at the same time, and December Boys would have been better off going all the way with one of them.
Read the full reviewRadcliffe is good at showing vulnerability but without the skills to give it gradation. The magic doesn't work for him this time.
Read the full reviewA coming-of-age tale so treacly it doesn?t just tug your heartstrings, it attempts to glue them to your ribs.

Bad Bad Bad
"This club has gone downhill full of rude ghetto people who want to start fights.I was there last night and some girls were trying to start a fight with another girl in the bathroom and no one ever did anything the drinks are too expensive and if you go on one floor its one price and then on another floor its 75 cents more for the same drink air conditioner is never on way too hot place needs a makeover sticky tables sticky floors and worse of all you pay a cover charge for an empty club.I wonder why no one goes there anymore."
Forget the Critics
"Go see this film. I think the critics have been overly harsh. This wasn't "best picture of the year" but it certainly didn't deserve the poor reviews. The time line in the film seems questionable, which is my only major criticism. Radcliffe has sorely been underated. I found his performance subtle and heartbreaking. A teen that is quite troubled and insecure came across beautifully. He wasn't the leading character and doesn't try to be. It's a delicate stepping stone away from Potter filmed over two years ago. Give the kid a break. He has improved brillliantly in Equus, a role that really showcased just how good an actor he really is. I thought December Boys was lovely. It makes me wonder if films from decades ago could ever get a good review from the critics today. Considering some of the films lately that get praised that are complete trash, I don't put too much stock into most critics anymore."
