The Onion (A.V. Club) | Scott Tobias

Put simply, the film excels most at not being awful.

A sophisticated story of disappointment and accommodation.

Absolutely, probably more comfortable with human romantic complication than the usual stuff released on Valentine's Day.

Brooks' take on the ups and downs of modern romance and the unexpected turns it takes is smart, funny, and (above all) uncommon. It's not hard to recommend this on Valentine's Day or at any other time.

A pleasingly non-formulaic romantic seriocomedy, Definitely, Maybe has charm and some depth.

It's generally enjoyable, amusing and more sophisticated than most films in this genre.

Maybe writer-director Adam Brooks has made a fluffy Woody Allen pastiche here, but it's arguably more pleasing than anything Allen himself has done lately.

This is a film bound and determined to do whatever it takes to be your Valentine. If it had trusted itself more, it might even have succeeded.

The film is far from a complete washout, and this is chiefly a tribute to its immensely attractive and appealing cast. Ryan Reynolds proves to have the stuff of a true leading. man.

To sum up, Definitely, Maybe is crap with compensations.

Definitely an overlong exercise in the concept of kismet, and maybe it's just what you want, in lieu of chocolates.

There's no maybe about its standing as romantic comedy -- definitely bad.

HOLLYWOOD BLOWS IT AGAIN...

"Okay, these knuckleheads in Hollywood know how to ruin a good idea. What started as a great movie for the family, -if your family is 12 and up, - turned into a movie for ages 15 and up. What a blown opportunity. Further, I hear enough political statements on the news, I do not need some mindless movie makers to throw it at me during a flick, -especially if I am paying to be there. Save your money, and leave this one alone. Wait until it comes out on free TV, i.e. TNT or the networks."

Definitely, Maybe

""Definitely, Maybe" is nice little romantic comedy but it's not for the kids. Oh, it's not for the Clinton's either. Read my full review at www.johnhuntspace.com/definitely.html"

Don't take your tween!

"I must agree with those who already mentioned this. My daughter actually asked to leave after the first 20 minutes or so. She was embarassed! Just too much information for kids that age. We, like many thought it was going to be a sweet romantic comedy."

Too much of a bad rap

"I read all the negative reviews and went to see this anyways. My 13 year old son hated it, and I have to agree with one reviewer that this is NOT appropriate for tweens. However, my husband and I really did enjoy the film as it's not a formulaic romantic comedy. You do end up liking or hating the characters - which in my mind is all the fun. You have to love the daughter - she's by far the best acctress in the film. Definitely worth your time and $$ to see - there were many very funny moments and sweet and tender moments as well. You can like the main character, even knowing he's not a perfect guy. Reminds me of the book Love Monkey - kind of a romantic comedy from a guy's perspective. YOu watch him go from woman to woman thinking - ah hah - this is why guys are so insane...I feel like it really gives you a look into how men make decisions about women."

Loved it! =]

"This movie was sooo adorable. I went with my guy friend and all he ever wants to see are action movies. And he acually liked it!! It's not your typical chick flick--It's better. Great story, and absolutely precious. :)Not for little kids though."
