Entertainment Weekly | Owen Gleiberman

Shepard's charisma has always reached back to an earlier time, so it's easy to accept him as a kind of pre-counterculture hero - Eastwood without the sneer - who aged into the era of tabloid scandal.

Don't Come Knocking expresses itself with deadpan humor, striking imagery, Western iconography and outbursts of strong emotions.

Filled with haunting visual panoramas. One of the most resonant is a nighttime shot of the Elko skyline dominated by a glittering casino. Evoking a once and future gold rush, it says more about the Old West and the New West than all of Mr. Shepard's elliptical, stagy dialogue can muster. Such powerful images make Don't Come Knocking well worth contemplating.

The finest scene in Don't Come Knocking is its quietest...The movie could have used a lot more of it.

There are scenes that don't even pretend to work. And others that have a sweetness and visual beauty that stops time and simply invites you to share.

Strikes some resonant chords but also hits notes that simply don't ring true and are borderline risible at times

It's a beautiful mess, but it's a mess all the same.

With its brilliant cast, its creative pedigree, Don't Come Knocking seemed as close to a sure thing as possible, but it only proves the sad truth that there's no such thing as a sure thing.

Despite a fine cast, the film feels as lost as Howard, unsure of its direction or tone.

Yea, I could truly relate to it (in a way)

"I saw it on some daggon', daggon'...daggon' station tonight........(some cable deal.......).......anyway, it was really good...."

Don't Come Knocking a Spoof?

"This has got to be a spoof. Watching this movie, I sat perplexed. It was about nothing. Then I began to laugh at the inane script, the overacting, the angst music that didn't fit. It is hilarious. Surely this movie is not serious. It is either an extremely bad movie, or a wonderfully designed spoof of how not to make a good movie. An ethereal young woman carrying her mother's ashes around in a blue jar. Come on."

If You Enjoy Lackluster...

"..then you may enjoy this overly and dramatically slow film. A half hour's worth of performance and script "squeezed" into 90 minutes of drab dialogue, badly directed scenes, pretentious tone and almost a silly sense of purpose. Left me with a feeling of, "so??." What a waste of acting talent."

Little Cowboy Lost

"Hmmm... one would expect better from Sam Shepard. Unfortunately, I could not manage to care about his character at all, given that he is obviously the shallowest man on the planet and therefore totally uninteresting. It would have helped to fill in the backstory a bit to shed light on just why he was so disconnected from everyone else. Jessica's performance was great, and I loved her character--so strong and with such class! The young man who played his son overacted terribly. My favorite in the entire cast was the young lady who played his "maybe" daughter. She lit up the screen and was affecting without saying a word. BTW, mfr65, just what is "obstinately heterosexual?""

in response to mfr65

"I had planned to see this movie given I reasoned that sam and jessica would give a compelling performance ..but really if you are going to give a stinging review and you want it to be believable or credible ...don't mix up your adverbs with your adjectives ...and "detumescent" ..is that anything like eau deu sarcophagus? my recomendation to mfr65? Keep your day job ..I am off to see this flick!"

Little radiantly awful: Wim Wenders' flaccid Western reverie, despite a regret

"Don't Come Knocking, a new movie by Wim Wenders about an obstinately heterosexual, if somewhat detumescent, cowboy, is so radiantly awful that, given the egghead credentials of the director and his screenwriter and star Sam Shepard, I initially took the charitable route and assumed I was in the presence of parody. Despite this movie is soaked in regret."
