Critic Reviews

Washington Post | Ann Hornaday

A star isn't born in El Cantante as much as it's reconfirmed. She's still here, and she's still got it.

The music is the uncontested highlight of El Cantante.

It may be best to approach El Cantante less as a movie than as a two-hour promotional video for a must-have soundtrack album.

Anthony delivers a respectable performance, but his character never comes into sharp focus. Consequently, Lavoe emerges as a supporting character in his own story.

Unfortunately, the music is as irresistible as the tired story of a musician succumbing to substance abuse is resistible.

Ideally, it would give you a sense of an entire people knocking the planet off its axis with a shake of their hips. If only El Cantante were that movie. Instead, it's a curiously sludgy cross between a Doomed Star biopic and a J. Lo vanity project.

Entertainment Weekly | Scott Brown

Anthony, with his famished thousand-yard stare, turns in a delicate -- perhaps too delicate -- performance more informed by the shadow of Lavoe's death than the spark of his art. And his shrill domestic scenes with Lopez feel small and squalid, as we wait restlessly for the band to play us out.

Chicago Sun-Times | Roger Ebert

If you're a fan of Hector Lavoe and Latin music, or Lopez and Anthony, you'll want to see El Cantante for what's good in it. Otherwise, you may be disappointed. The director (Leon Ichaso) and his co-writers haven't licked a crucial question: Why do we need to see this movie and not just listen to the music?

A virtual template of every imaginable cliche of the musical biopic, picture suffers from a lack of narrative and character focus

The film doesn't make a case for Lavoe as an important artist.

Lot's of important moments

"Not a bad film over all. As an entertainer and a person who suffers from depression, I could really relate to alot of this film. I could feel what Hector was going through. Jennifer Lopez did a great job."

Really Wanted To See IT

"My wife and I are African-Americans who grew up in NYC during the 60's and 70's. We lived and breathed latin music. Every weekend would bring house parties and dances and in our circle [a very large one] in Manahattan and Queens it meant dancing to Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, TP etc. It meant hangin' out at the Palladium or the Corso and getting down [who had the baddest moves/steps]. It was a way of life. Why then are we denied the opportunity to re-live the good 'ole days of our youth in the "City". This is not just an affront to Latinos but to all people who appreciate a glorious culture and it's vibrant music. Unfortunately I am a senior business executive living in of all places Pittsburgh, PA where the movie did not show at all---what a disrace!"

"the best in the 70 truly was the salsa going on and people going to discos with out fear like know. it sho the street how empty they were in the 70 when you was able to trust the street of new york city. J lo and Marck show no only the salsa and Hector life but the best life of New York city they are excellent the best. Maria Ramos"

La Voz

"Simply, Hector is La voz, he was the truly pioneer of salsa in the U.S. wish I was there when he was a star. Marc and Jlo are at their best. But the music, the lyrics are amazing. This movie will become a must have in all latin families. I love Salsa and I this movie is a real masterpiece."

A MUST SEE

"This film proves that critics are useless....look how average the numbers were given to this fflm. How many times I watched "duds" because I believe the hype. However, this film is magical in the flash back to this famous salsa performer and singer. The costumes ALONE are worth your time..the music, Jennifer is good here and the plot...A great choice."

El Cantante

"Dips to JLo and Marc, they portrayed the couple exactly for what they were lovers on the verge of a breakdown, what a shame the it was only showing in 2 theatres in the BX, we latinos need to support our people/heritage. If you enjoy salsa, you will definitely enjoy this movie, I danced in my seat."
