As Tom Hanks did in "Cast Away," Will Smith pulls off this half-insane role perfectly.

While I Am Legend is reasonably absorbing, it can be difficult to focus on the film that actually made it to the screen, instead of the many versions that didn't.

In spirit, I Am Legend is caught in some abstractly doom-laden sci-fi past. For what it is, though, the film is well-done, a case of suspenseful competence trumping questionable relevance.

Trouble enters only when the script overcomplicates things in the end. Until then, especially in a growling dogfight, director Francis Lawrence (Constantine) keeps you squirming.

It's neither a neat little allegory about faith nor a transcendently entertaining one. I Am Legend is actually about the last man on earth played by one of the last real movie stars on earth. To be honest, Smith was all I was thinking about while I sat through I Am Legend.

If it is true that mankind has 100 years to live before we destroy our planet, it provides an enlightening vision of how Manhattan will look when it lives on without us. The movie works well while it's running, although it raises questions that later only mutate in our minds.

Instead of maintaining its edgy sense of constant discomfort, the movie is compelled to make Neville as fuzzily adorable and messianic as possible.

Remarkably eerie yet annoyingly larded with cheap horror-film shock effects, I Am Legend stands as an effective but also irksome adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic 1954 sci-fi novel.

There is something graceful and effortless about this performance (Mr. Smith's), which not only shows what it might feel like to be the last man on earth, but also demonstrates what it is to be a movie star.

Smith, sporting a newly buffed physique, delivers an extraordinary performance as a man slowly coming unglued under the strain of no human contact and a constantly alternating role of hunter and prey.

A little more than halfway in, Legend, based on the book by Richard Matheson (which also spawned 1971's Omega Man and 1964's TheLast Man on Earth), deteriorates into a schlocky zombie horror flick and loses its steam.

A big part of the reason for this movie's nose dive around the one-hour mark is that, seen up close, the Infected just aren't that scary.

If you want lots of Will Smith and industrial-strength special effects, the movie delivers.

The star, as solo practitioner, does a terrific job of holding our attention when we're not taking in surreal vistas of a deserted Manhattan that are fascinating in their own right. Still, zombies are zombies, and this nasty lot, mostly digital creations of variable quality, keep draining the distinction that the movie seeks and occasionally finds.

"The movie is awesome with alot of action and intense moments butttt. They Messed up the ending. In the book he walks out of his house to do his daily routine of finding sleeping zombies and killing them in their sleep. When suddenly a women is found running around franticaly in search of shelter. Robert gladly takes her in as long as he can do tests on her. But when she agrees she grabs a lamp and knocks Robert out. The next thing he knows is that he is in a camp locked in a room with tons of screaming outside. When someone comes in they tell him since he is immune to the virus and they are going to sarcrifice him to get his blood to make a cure. As the book ends it says I am Legend im the only Cure IM a legend!!!!!!!!!and the book ends. Also there was no dog in the book from the one he found on the road to do tests on.But all in all I liked the movie ending better because people would diss out the book ending. Well 5 star MOvie!!!!!!"

Highly Recommend

"I have just seen one version of this movie, and I am going to definitely buy the special edition. Sci Fi as a genre is usually predictable, and I am Legend is no exception. However, what sets this movie about a scientist desperate to find a cure for a disease when he doesn't even know there are any other "human" survivors left, is Will Smith. Every emotion you can imagine is portrayed by Mr. Smith, anger, fear, pain and above all loneliness. A man with only his beloved dog for a companion, so lonely he can recite the dialogue of childrens movies, so afraid at night he has to barricade himself in a fortress of a home, all the while trying to keep some semblance of a "normal life", all the while desperate to find someone out there that is human.I have never seen a movie by Will Smith I did not enjoy, and he again has shown why he is one of the finest actors we have. He is to be treasured. I doubt I would watch this again if any other actor had tried this part, but never once was I bored and I cried for him.You do Philly proud, Will :)."

Most Incredible Movie

"*Just a note: the only real CGI in this film is of the deer, lions, and zombies, but even some of the zombies had actors playing the parts who were later CGI'd to be the creatures. Also, the scenes of a deserted NY are real, not CGI. Everything--grass, cars, trash, etc.--was intentionally placed by the crew, and New Yorkers and tourists were held back from 5th Avenue (this is all in the bonus material found on the special edition copy of the movie).I am completely confused about some of the reviews on here. One mother is upset that her "just turned 13" year old son was traumatized by the scary parts (of this PG-13 movie), claiming that Will Smith never eluded to the scariness; I just watched the trailers again, and YES IT DOES. Others have complained about the loud screeching, but I get the impression that these were seen at IMAX theatres, which everyone knows have far more speakers (larger too) than regular theatres, so anything will be louder. The slow pace of the movie was genius as it matched his daily life. Are all the negative reviewers simply interested in movies that a) give it all away in the previews, b) don't require any thinking, and c) tell the same stories in the same predictable ways? You are all doing a disservice to people with open, intelligent minds who enjoy a deep thought and mental challenges. I have seen this movie twice and plan on seeing it again this weekend. This movie takes (many) moviegoers to a place where silence and attention to detail make all the difference. I think that Will did his best acting when he had to take care of his dog. It was perfectly quiet and not at all graphic, yet we can see just how determined yet hurt Will's character is simply by the look on his face. If you needed to see what he was doing and have him narrate it to you with exciting music in the background, then I suggest you rent the latest Dane Cook movie and enjoy your beer."

Not good

"The whole plot is ridiculous. A virus that causes a person to look like a zombie and try to eat you, come on..... The virus infected people look like an unwrapped mummy, its so hilarious. The virus causes them to be almost supernatural, as they can can crack there head against the glass like a billion times( see terrible ending) and be fine. No human could do that and stil live. Also no human can live with a pulse over 200 for any long amount of time. This movie is just so bad, if you like movies like resident evil maybe this will appeal to you."

Look it's a butterfly

"If You didn't see the butterfly in the glass you didn't get it, you didn't understand it. If you didn't understand it your criticisms are best left unsaid. This moive and the responses are the reason why there are so many bad movies making so much many. If you can see past the obvious holler. portal266@hotmail.com"
