Clint's 'Letters' coming early

Warner Bros. is moving up the release date of Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language "Letters From Iwo Jima" -- the companion pic to "Flags of Our Fathers" -- from Feb. 9 to Dec. 20. New frame puts "Letters" up for awards consideration, with Warners planning to make the film available to critics groups and guilds in its limited run.

"Letters From Iwo Jima," Clint Eastwood's ambitious companion piece to "Flags of Our Fathers," has been dated and stamped. Warner Bros. Pictures will open the Japanese-language film in the U.S. on Feb. 9. Move ends plenty of speculation as to how much time Eastwood would allow between "Flags" -- which Paramount/DreamWorks bows domestically on Oct. 20 -- and "Letters."

'Flags' will take Tokyo

Clint Eastwood's WWII pic "Flags of Our Fathers" will open the 19th Tokyo Film Festival on Oct. 21, fest organizers announced Monday. Movie is one of a pair Eastwood is helming about the battle against the Japanese for the island of Iwo Jima -- one told from the American perspective ("Flags"), the other from the Japanese POV ("Red Sun, Black Sand"). DreamWorks and Warner Bros. partner on both; "Flags" opens in the U.S. on Oct. 20, but no release date has yet been set for "Red Sun."
