San Francisco Chronicle | Ruthe Stein

Exhilarating and enchanting family picture. It's the best I've seen this year and highly recommended for girls and for boys, too.

It's hard to imagine kids not enjoying the good-hearted, lovingly shot fantasy of it all, and Breslin is charming, though most viewers past puberty will likely yearn to be voted off the Island.

Even as the derivative roots of Nim's Island are clearly visible, kids will no doubt vicariously enjoy Nim's adventures and Edenic existence. And how refreshing, for once, to see a girl embark on derring-do that, in Nim's own words, makes her the hero of her own story.

This family comedy adventure from Walden Media is likable in a scruffy way. Its characters, especially the youngest one, are engaging, and few adults are immune to childhood fantasies about secluded tropical isles.

There's nothing especially wrong with Nim's Island, but there's not a lot right about it either.

8- to 12-year-olds will have a good time, and you'll have a good time watching them have a good time. Otherwise, the film's an oddity.

An entertaining, diverting adventure saga that offers excitement and a relatable heroine for children, and also will remind their parents of favorite classics from their own youth.

Sweet but ho-hum adaptation of Wendy Orr?s novel, a comedy-adventure that never quite finds its tone.

Directors Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin deliver some eye-catching fantasy sequences in the early scenes, but the film grows more mundane and the tone more uneven as it goes on.

The premise, from the book by Wendy Orr, is terrific, but the execution seems designed to make all but the youngest viewers fling copies of the book at the screen in frustration.

A picturesque adventure-comedy that quickly capsizes under the weight of its obnoxious slapstick, pedestrian dialogue and general unwillingness to rise above stock ideas and situations.

Better for kids

"while i did enjoy it I felt that for the most part this is a kids movie. the overall plot teaches kids about being able to stand up for themselves when an adult is absent. which is a great message in itself. the only thing i found lacking was it didn't expand on Alex Rover's arrival on the Island. There was obvious disbelief and disappointment on Nim's part. Not to mention Jack's arrival back he just accepts her presence and the three of them become a sort of family. So a little disapointed there but kids will like it."

Feel good movie

"I needed a good laugh andf got it in spades. Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler had great chemistry and they were hilarious.Butler shows in his movies that he can be funny, dramatic, action hero, romantic, etc., I love him next to Hugh Jackman he is my favorite actor."

Thought it would be better.

"I was really looking forward to seeing this movie and planned to take my 7 yr. old neice.I have to say after seeing it I will not be seeing it a second time with her after all. It was not a bad movie but not great either.I found myself bored a few times and Foster's character irritating. I am going threw health issues and wanted a nice, feel good movie.Thats hard to find these days.Im only 40 so I enjoy movies for the young and old.All I can say is the movie did not meet my expectations and believe me they where not that high.I dont think the movie would keep the interest of a child to be honest with you.I wished I had better things to say.Wait for the video."

Great Family Film Fun, but...

"Great time for a family film. Laugh out loud antics and touching, sweet moments. Jodie Foster is great in an atypical role. Nice push for her. Having loved Abbigail Breslin in "Little Miss Sunshine" I was looking forward to seeing her in this. However, I have to say, she's the weakest link.First, it's an adventure film and the girl she plays grows up Swiss Family Robinson style. However Ms. Breslin moves like she's never played outside before. It's clear that a double is used in most (all?) of the action scenes and in "easy" ones, say, running down the beach, she looks awkward and unbelievable. The heavy tan was about the only thing that made her look like she fit in the tropical setting. SO, I wish they had cast an girl who actually is comfortable in the outdoors; it would have made the role much more believable."
