Cohen to cut chops on 'Sweeney Todd'
11/13/06Sacha Baron Cohen has firmed plans to follow "Borat" with some barbering in "Sweeney Todd," the screen version of the Stephen Sondheim musical Tim Burton will shoot for DreamWorks and Warner Bros. Cohen will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli, a barber who becomes the nemesis of Sweeney Todd. Todd's the barber who teams with the murderess Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) to kill people, grind them up and use them in her meat pies. Cohen will be putting in only a couple weeks of work.
WB, D'Works sweet on 'Sweeney'
08/16/06Warner Bros. Pictures is partnering with DreamWorks on the long-gestating film version of musical "Sweeney Todd." Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically, with Warner taking international rights. Stephen Sondheim musical thriller revolves around the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who is wrongfully imprisoned only to later seek revenge on the judge who sent him up the river. Tim Burton will direct and Johnny Depp star in the duo's sixth collaboration.
Burton, Carrey put 'Believe' on hold
06/12/06Believe it or not, Paramount Pictures has postponed its Tim Burton-directed "Ripley's Believe It or Not." But Par could still have a Burton-directed film on its schedule: The helmer will turn his attention to "Sweeney Todd," a feature adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical developed by DreamWorks. Johnny Depp is attached to reteam with Burton for "Todd." Carrey will likely make another comedy while he, Burton and Paramount continue to work, in hopes they can meet up in China in fall 2007.
