Critic Reviews

Entertainment Weekly | Lisa Schwarzbaum

Without doing anything so divisive as taking sides, The Counterfeiters pays sympathetic attention to those who play their cards to win even when the rules are terrible, not least because the remarkable Markovics, an Austrian TV actor with a pugnacious anvil of a head, is so riveting as an unsaintly survivor.

From an historical perspective, the story is interesting because it shows a different side of the war than what we're used to observing in motion pictures.

The Counterfeiters is inevitably serious, even austere, and full of chilling, ironic details.

The Counterfeiters is a swift and suspenseful thriller, and perhaps a little too entertaining for its own good.

The Counterfeiters demonstrates that no matter how many Holocaust stories the movies tell, there are always new and unexpected ones waiting to be revealed.

The moral quandary of Nazi complicity is revisited in taut drama The Counterfeiters, which tells the true story of a disparate group of imprisoned artists, financiers and swindlers secretly assembled in a concentration camp to forge millions of pound and dollar notes to support the German war effort.

Markovics largely rescues the film with his mesmerizingly layered, steady performance as a man who solves the problem of compromise by refusing to admit that he's compromising.

WW2 `MOVIE AT ITS BEST

"Great acting ,historicaly correct from the uniforms down to the undergarments,Suspensful, constantly on the edge of your seat.Nazis shown as they were acuratley.Entertainment beyond your immagination. The German spoken is more authentic as well..They should have had a little yiddish spoken as jewish prisoners `always spoke yiddish. The praying was inacurate as jews do not kneel when they pray ."

One Must Not Forget

"A very powerful film that forces us to face man's inhumanity to man. Although more than fifty years have passed since the Holocaust occured, it says as much about man's wars of blood and death as those events of the present."

A must see movie

"For those who did not live through this part of History, this movie is a reminder of the Holocaust and the brutality and suffering of innocent people because they were Jews--To me, one of the most poignant moments was when an officer stood and peed directly on Markovics--I was on the verge of tears often-- My only criticism is, that sometimes because of the placement of the titles, they were difficult to read. It deserved to win Best Foreign Film--To think that it was produced in Austria, a counrty where anti-semitism is again growing."

Almost as good as "The Lives of Others"

"If "The Lives of Others" was a 9.5, this has got to be at least an 8.5 or posibly even a 9.Go see it. Powerful theme, very good acting, suspense, pathos."
