Variety | Staff (Not Credited)

Among the considerable achievements of Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter is the fact that the film remains intense, powerful and fascinating for more than three hours.

A big, awkward, crazily ambitious, sometimes breathtaking motion picture that comes as close to being a popular epic as any movie about this country since "The Godfather."

the best movie

"i think that this movie epitomizes everything we think we know about war - we think we are so smart - sitting on our coaches and giving our opinions like we actually have one - the scene when they are in the bar and frankie valley is playing is one of the best scenes of any movie ever - it makes me nostalgic - for days long gone and days we wont ever have again -"

100% over rated

"I cannot believe the positive reviews this movie has received. It is essentially about a group of drunken morons, some of which go to Vietnam. the first hour and a half serves no real purpose and the attempts at charactor development are shabby and shallow. There is a 10 minute scene in a POW camp which is well done, but not nearly enough to save this over rated film. You waste 3 hours of your life just to find out the entire picture revolves around a group of schmucks playing Russian roulette."

one of the best

"This is one of the greatest movies ever made.people usually think of the films violence when they think of the film, but the violence and war scenes only work as a tool and the true greatness of the film comes from the depth of the characters and some of the best acting ever caught on film.Easily Walkens best film and arguably Deniros as well."
