Critic Reviews

The New York Times | Jeannette Catsoulis

Feels passé and lacks a charismatic lead. Too bad Daniel Radcliffe is an only child.

A mostly entertaining movie with built-in appeal to young audiences. The good news for parents is that it won't put them to sleep.

The film plods along without a lot of excitement or inspiration.

Starts out with promise but staggers under the weight of trying to take on too much.|The tone is murky: The story attempts to blend adolescent angst with fantasy adventure, and the result is rather clunky.

Slick, good-looking, cluttered pic won't please fans of novelist Susan Cooper's original "The Dark Is Rising" sequence. But then, they are mostly grown-ups by now, and this very Hollywood-style adaptation of a very English book is aimed squarely at tweens.

A movie that should've been made shortly after its source material -- Susan Cooper's Newbery winner -- debuted in 1973. As is, it feels entirely too generic to work today.

Dreary, spectacle-driven adaptation.

This movie is a particular disappointment. Although The Seeker is in Walden's tradition of positive storytelling, John Hodge's script is guilty of downright goofy utterances on occasion.

Boston Globe | Ty Burr

The producers - Fox Films and the usually reliable Walden Media - have tried to gin up the story for multiplex audiences. They've succeeded in making a movie for no audience at all.

Better than most

"We have paid the 8.50 per person for movies that have no plot, and do not hold your interest or are filled with unnecessary sex scenes. Did not read the book, not everyone has you know. I thought this move was extremely entertaining and the effects were really good. It held my attention the entire time and it didn't feel as if the story went nowhere, but had just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. Went with my husband"

i laughed really hard

"at how terrible the acting and costumes were in this movie. i felt like i was watching an hour long nickelodeon or disney channel special. it tries real hard to follow the harry potter/LoTR style, and does fairly well with the set design, but the quality of acting is hardly fit for day time tv. go see this if you are a 8-12 year old girl, or if you really enjoy making fun of dumb movies."

Enjoyed this movie!

"Very good acting and exciting to watch. Parts were predictable but still enjoyable. Joaquin Phoenix was wonderfu"

A

"ok first off i didnt even know that this movie was based on a book, which im sure if you are someone who has read the book will have complaints because they never make movies EXACTLY according to how the book describes the story-perfect examples are lord of the rings and harry potter. I thought this move was extremely entertaining and the effects were really good. it kept my attention the entire time and it didn't feel as if the story dragged on. even my wife stayed awake the whole time and enjoyed it which is rare for her when it comes to a movie of this genre. i thought the acting was excellent and i will definitly recommend this move to my friends and family. i had expectations of this movie being a bite off of Eragon or Narnia, but it proved me wrong and i will definitly buy the dvd when it comes out :)"

It tried to be a good movie...

"I'm pretty open to films, and never listen to critics. But 'The Seeker' was rushed, and could have been better told if it tried, at the very least, to develop the plot. The characters were never intriguing, and 'plot twists' made little, if any logical sense (as in you can't connect it with any other point in the movie). And why, may I ask, was 89% of the movie filmed in slow motion? To kick up the run time, perhaps? Not worth the money, I'm sorry."

2007 VAN HALEN TOUR ROCKS!

"Diamond Dave....absolutely rocks! Honestly, I have not heard much of his music apart from Van Halen, but just saw them in concert in Philly last week and DLR brought down the house!! Everyone was awesome. Incredible energy, don't know how they do it. I hope they keep it together to finish out the tour. DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR!"
